Waves Take 3-1 Season Series Lead Over Newport

The Ocean State Waves (9-18) defeated the Newport Gulls (16-11-1) on Friday night, securing their third win in four meetings this season and taking a 3-1 lead in the season series.
After winning two of the first three matchups against Newport, the Waves entered Friday looking to add to their winning column over their in-state rivals.
Kayden Faulcon got the start for Ocean State opposite Newport's Victor Frederick.
The Waves wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Gabriel Milano launched a two-run home run in the top of the first to give the Waves an early 2-0 advantage.
Newport answered immediately, however, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take its only lead of the night at 3-2.
Neither team found the scoreboard again until the fifth inning, when the Waves regained control. Zach Plasschaert delivered an RBI hit to tie the game before Jack LaRose followed with another RBI to put Ocean State back in front, 5-3.
The Waves added yet another run in the top of the eighth when Blaize Ward drove in a run with an RBI single, extending the lead to 6-3.
The Waves' bullpen took care of the rest. After another strong relief effort, Trey Telfer came on in the ninth and stayed dominant on the mound, striking out all three Newport batters to hand Newport its third loss to the Waves this season.
The Waves will look to carry that momentum into Saturday night's matchup against the NECBL-leading Martha's Vineyard Sharks at Old Mountain Field.
The Waves have already proven they can compete with the Sharks this season, snapping Martha's Vineyard's 10-game winning streak in their previous meeting at Old Mountain Field.
Saturday's contest will also serve as Host Family Appreciation Night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
