The Ocean State Waves (8-16) earned their second victory over the Newport Gulls (14-9-1) this season with a dominant 4-3 comeback win at Cardines Field.
The Waves struck first in the opening inning when Max Farrell lined an RBI single to score Tommy Meluskey, giving the Waves an early 1-0 lead.
Newport responded in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. The Gulls held that lead into the ninth inning as both teams were kept off the scoreboard for the next five innings.
The Waves offense came alive in the top of the ninth. Cameron Papetti launched a game-tying two-run home run to even the score at 3-3. Moments later, Zach Plasschaert delivered the go-ahead RBI, bringing home Justin Hackett to give the Waves a 4-3 lead.
Newport closer Mickey McClaskey allowed three earned runs and did not record a strikeout during his outing.
On the mound, Trey Telfer closed out the final two innings with a strong performance, preserving the one-run lead and securing the Waves' comeback victory over their in-state rivals.
With the win, the Waves extended their winning streak to two games and will look to keep the momentum going Sunday afternoon against the North Shore Navigators. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
