Waves Clinch First Season Series Win Over Gulls Since 2018

The Ocean State Waves clinched the season series against the Newport Gulls, taking the rivalry 4-1 for their first season-series victory over their in-state rivals since 2018.
Boston Flannery, a newcomer from the University of North Carolina, was named the Waves' Player of the Game after an outstanding performance on the mound. Flannery pitched 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run while helping the Waves secure the victory.
It was a special night for the McCarthy family as Dylan McCarthy got the start on the mound for the Waves, while his younger brother, Kaiden McCarthy, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Kaiden was recently selected 48th overall in the 2026 MLB Draft.
The Gulls struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before adding another run in the third. The Waves answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take their first lead of the game.
Gabriel Milano provided the big swing with a two-run home run, bringing home Jackson Bradfield to cut into the deficit and spark the rally from the Waves.
Newport tied the game in the top of the fourth before reclaiming the lead in the fifth.
Justin Hackett answered with his first home run of the season, tying the game at 4-4.
The Waves took the lead for good when Max Farrell came around to score on an RBI single by Blaize Ward, making it 5-4. Strong defense and Flannery's dominant outing on the mound allowed Ocean State to hold on for the win.
After the game, Flannery reflected on his first few weeks with the Waves and what has made the experience so memorable.
"It's been awesome," Flannery said. "We have such a great group of guys, and everybody's pulling for one another, so being a part of that has been a feeling I can't even describe."
The Waves will enjoy an off day before returning to action on Thursday when they take on the Valley Blue Sox.
