The Ocean State Waves (6-13) saw another late lead slip away on Monday night, falling 6-4 to the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (13-4) for their sixth consecutive loss.
After once again jumping out to an early advantage, the Waves were unable to hold off the Sharks, who scored four runs in the eighth inning to complete the comeback.
The last time the two teams met, the Waves snapped Martha's Vineyard's 10-game winning streak. This time, however, the Sharks responded with a win of their own.
Luke Billings got the start on the mound for Ocean State, pitching 3.0 innings while allowing just one earned run.
The Waves struck first in the top of the second when Justin Hackett drove in the game's opening run. The Waves doubled their lead an inning later with a sacrifice fly from Max Farrell to score Owen Morgan and make it 2-0.
Martha's Vineyard evened the score in the bottom of the third, but the Waves answered in the fifth. Farrell collected his second RBI of the night, putting the Waves back in front 3-2 before Morgan extended the lead to 4-2 with a home run.
Holding a two-run advantage entering the eighth, the Waves looked in position to bring home a win. Instead, the Sharks broke through against reliever Cooper Waddle, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead they would not surrender.
The Waves were unable to secure a comeback in the ninth inning, extending their losing streak to six games.
The Waves will look to bounce back after an off day on Tuesday when they travel to face the Mystic Schooners on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Mystic, Connecticut.
