The Ocean State Waves (6-13) have struggled to finish games this season, with late-inning leads slipping away. That trend continued on Saturday against the Mystic Schooners (11-7) as another strong start ended in defeat, extending the team's losing streak to four games.
Starting on the mound for the Waves was Elliot Eaton of Princeton University. Entering the game with nine strikeouts on the season, Eaton added three more against Mystic.
Eaton pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out three batters.
He recorded two strikeouts in the top of the second and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the game within reach.
Mystic struck first in the top of the second, taking an early 1-0 lead, but the Waves responded quickly.
In the bottom of the second, Gavin Marchese singled and later stole second to put himself in scoring position with one out. Adonis Medina followed with an RBI single to bring home Marchese and tie the game at 1-1.
Mystic took the lead in the top of the fifth following an RBI from UConn's Camden Righi.
Bryant Yoak made his first appearance in a Waves uniform in the top of the eighth and showed promise on the mound despite allowing four runs.
In the bottom of the eighth, Medina blasted his first home run of the season to cut into the deficit and tie the game. The Waves took the lead after Samuel Fernandez doubled to right field to earn himself an RBI and bring in Justin Hackett to score.
Despite Eaton's strong start and Medina's strong performance, the Waves were unable to hold off the Schooners. Mystic erupted for six runs in the top of the ninth to take a commanding 8-3 lead.
The Waves attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, as Medina and Marchese each recorded singles, but they were unable to bring any runners home.
The Waves will look to snap their four-game losing streak in an afternoon matchup against the Danbury Westerners. Danbury holds a 2-0 season series lead over the Waves. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m
