The Ocean State Waves (6-11) faced off against the Upper Valley Nighthawks (8-7-1) on Thursday night.
The Waves entered the matchup looking to bounce back after an extra-inning loss to the Bristol Blues. They were also looking for revenge after falling to the Nighthawks 5-4 on Saturday, when Upper Valley tied the game in the bottom of the seventh before taking the lead moments later.
Kayden Faulcon got the start on the mound for the Waves, making his second start of the season. Faulcon, who is currently in the transfer portal, pitched 5.0 innings, striking out six batters while allowing just one earned run.
The Waves built a strong 5-0 lead through the first four innings before Upper Valley got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth.
Kalen Applefield drove in two runs in the bottom of the second, while Max Farrell also came around to score to give the Waves an early advantage.
In the bottom of the third, Jack LaRose and Adonis Medina each recorded an RBI to extend the Waves' lead.
Holding a 5-1 advantage entering the sixth inning, the Waves looked to maintain their lead and close out the game.
Upper Valley, however, had other plans. The Nighthawks scored two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit before taking the lead in the seventh with three more runs, capitalizing on a pair of Waves errors and walks.
The game shifted in Upper Valley's favor when Charley Magoulick recorded a three-run home run, extending the Nighthawks' lead to 9-5. Upper Valley added another run before the inning ended, sending the Waves into the bottom of the seventh trailing by five.
The Waves were unable to secure a comeback despite generating scoring opportunities, including an RBI from Gabriel Milano in the bottom of the ninth.
The Waves will look to bounce back Friday night when they travel to Cardines Field in Newport, Rhode Island, to take on the Newport Gulls. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
